Wrinkle Relaxing Injections

Wrinkle Relaxing Injections (WRI) is an effective treatment for smoothing wrinkles and fine lines on the face and neck. It works by inhibiting the signals from the nerves to the muscles preventing their contraction and so the wrinkles relax and soften. As the injection is acting on muscles it is most effective in treating wrinkles caused by the contraction of muscles, these are called dynamic wrinkles. WRI is less effective at treating the wrinkles caused by loose skin or gravity. These so called “static” wrinkles are best treated by fillers or Growth Factor based therapies to boost the underlying support or the use of Fibroblasting or laser to re-tighten the skin.

Typically, the doctor injects a small, diluted amount of the toxin into the muscles. The toxin prevents the release of Acetylcholine, a chemical messenger or neurotransmitter, inhibiting the normal contraction of muscles so wrinkles relax and soften. This procedure works well for frown wrinkles, lines around the eye, and forehead lines.

At the PD Clinic, we use Bocouture® which is a Botulinum type A formulation where complex proteins have been removed by an extensive purification process from the botulinum toxin complex. In contrast to the other commercially available preparations, Bocouture® contains the pure 150 kD neurotoxin.

This means that Bocouture® is able to provide similar results to those achievable with other products without the risk of antibody formation, providing continual long lasting effects.

How long does it take to see the results of WRI?

It takes 5 to 7 days before the effects of WRI start to work and for you to start to see a reduction in the lines and wrinkles on the area treated. It takes 2 weeks to see the full effect of the treatment with WRI that you get and it will last around 4 to 6 months.

Is WRI safe?

Like most treatments, WRI has potential minor side effects on some patients. During the injection, you can expect temporary bruising. The injection site can get red, bruised, or can also swell. However, some of these can be avoided if the procedure is done carefully. If your treatment is successful, you can resume your routine immediately. Headaches can also happen, but this is rare. If they do occur, they clear up within 24 to 48 hours. Some patients may also experience eye lid drooping, which usually resolves within 3 weeks.

Rare potential side effects you may experience, include:

Flu-like illness
Neck weakness
Temporary weakness
Mild nausea
Blurred vision
Dry mouth
Decreased eyesight

Some side effects, such as eye drooping, usually occur when WRI moves around. As such, it is advisable not to rub the injection site for 12 hours following the procedure. Bleeding and bruising usually occurs if the doctor injects the needle too deep and hits a blood vessel. Some of these effects can occur for hours or even weeks after getting an injection.
